The First North Carolina Infantry Regiment was mustered into service on May 15, 1861 with the intention that its recruits would serve for a six-month period. Enlistees came from nearly all regions of North Carolina, including the eastern low country, central North Carolina (including recruits from the University of North Carolina) and the Mecklenburg County area.
